Give back and get involved by volunteering at Ocean Institute’s annual Maritime Festival!

Are you interested in making a difference? Join our dedicated team of volunteers who help with the Ocean Institute’s annual Maritime Festival.

With a variety of specialized Volunteer Roles, we are sure to have an opportunity that is just right for you. A complete list of descriptions and minimum qualifications are outlined at the link below.

Individual adults, teens, and families are welcome! Anyone can signup to volunteer! This is a great opportunity for clubs, high schools, philanthropic days for companies, etc.

  • Volunteers who work a full day (1 full day shift or 2 half-day shifts) will get free lunch!
  • Volunteers who work a total of 8 hours throughout the whole weekend will receive a custom Maritime Festival Volunteer T-shirt!

Parking Information

Ocean Institute is happy to provide FREE parking and shuttles to all of our staff and volunteers! While there are various locations to park in Dana Point Harbor, the parking near the festival is very limited due to us utilizing our surrounding parking lots for festivities. Need accessible parking? We will have a limited amount of handicap spaces saved in the COVE ROAD LOT, please allow to extra time before experience or events to ensure a spot. Bring vaild handicap verification for parking.

SHUTTLES – Saturday and Sunday Shuttles will be dropping off at the round-a-bout outside of Ocean Institute’s Main parking lot.

Shuttles will pick up every 25-30 minutes

DP TROLLEY

Hop on the trolley and ride into the harbor!

  • Saturday : 10am-10pm
  • Sunday: 11am-8pm

North bound stop N8 or South bound stop S14.

Both of these stops will drop you at Dana Point Harbor Drive and Golden Lantern, just a 14 minute (.7 mile) walk from the festival! See full schedule or visit the trolley webpage.

Who can sign up to be a volunteer for this event?

Anyone! These shifts are open to everyone, not just Ocean Institute volunteers. Tell your friends! Some of these positions request volunteers sign up with a friend. 

What time is this event?

Maritime Festival is a 3-day event, starting on Friday, September 13 and ending on Sunday, September 15.

What should I wear?

Wear a neutral colored t-shirt (black, white, gray, brown, etc.), as you will be given a volunteer vest.

Pants/shorts must be khaki, dark grey, navy blue, or black. If you wear jeans, they must be pants. Shorts must be a minimum of 6 inches on the inseam. Pants should not be excessively form-fitting or ripped/distressed.

Shoes must be closed-toe, closed heel, non-slip and appropriate for being on your feet for extended periods of time. Crocs are not allowed!

Sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen are highly recommended. These items will not be provided.

What should I bring?

Bring a reusable water bottle! It will be hot outside so it’s important to be hydrated throughout the day.

Bringing food and snacks is highly recommended. Lunch will only be provided if you work a full-day shift (6+ hours in one day).

If you have a community service form that you need signed, bring it to the shift to be signed by Volunteer Coordinator. 

Where can I park?

The OI campus will not have any available parking for volunteers. There will be a free shuttle that will drive back and forth to Marco Forster Middle School on Saturday and Dana Hills High School on Sunday. There will be plenty of free parking at these two spaces and shuttle rides to Ocean Institute are free. Both days the shuttle will run from 6:30am to 8:15pm. Shuttles will pick up passengers every 25-30 minutes, so please keep this in mind to arrive at Ocean Institute with ampl time to navigate the area before the start of your shift.
